Get Motivated: Music vs. TV

| | | |

from fitsugar.com

I often find that half the battle of going to the gym is motivating myself to get there. One easy tip I do to get myself motivated is to turn off the tv and turn on some music. In the mornings, when I am getting ready to go to the gym, I turn on music that I can move to as I get ready.

FITNESS: Changing routine aids body, soul

| | | | | |

MARIA HOWARD

Don't pick just one form of exercise to help you get fit this fall. Pick two, three, maybe even four. Everyone knows that it's best to cross-train. But making yourself commit to it is another matter. Cross-training is essentially rotating exercises so that your body is constantly challenged. Optimally, you want to include a variety of ways to get in cardiovascular, strength, agility, balance and flexibility work. How can you get all that in when it's hard enough to find time for a quick run? Remember that working in alternative exercises doesn't mean you have to spend more time overall on fitness.

Your Musical Tastes Reveal Your Life Chords - from HealthDay

| | | | | |

By E.J. Mundell HealthDay Reporter 1 hour, 19 minutes ago

WEDNESDAY, Sept. 20 (HealthDay News) -- Madonna, Mozart or Eminem? Your preference in music could predict the patterns of your life, including your sexual activity, drug use, and even your political outlook, a new British survey contends. And it's not as predictable as you'd think. The survey of 2,500 people found, for example, that opera fans were as likely as other music lovers to try hallucinogenic drugs, and that many hip-hop fans had somewhat conservative views on a wide range of issues.

Spinning classes can help you burn fat quickly

| | | |

From Outside

Spinning classes can help you burn fat quickly, depending on the kind of class the instructor is leading. Don't buy into the idea that low-intensity exercise (riding at a low heart rate or exertion level) is going to get you into a "fat burning" zone. The truth is, you burn fat at every intensity level, and when you exercise at a high and sustainable exertion level, like 70 to 75 percent of your maximum, you're burning a lot of calories and a lot of fat each minute.

Monitor tracks altitude-related exercise vital signs

Like money, elevation changes everything. And, as every high altitude athlete knows, that thin alpine air can cause unexpected meltdown in the blood oxygen department without very careful monitoring. Now comes a cute little lifesaver designed especially for tracking critical altitude-related vital signs. (click image to enlarge)

Check Mate(tm) answers the sports and aviation markets’ demand for a lightweight, inexpensive monitor for measuring blood oxygen saturation and heart rate during physically active and high-altitude activities. It offers the user a greater ability to monitor these vital signs under motion and is less expensive than most available devices.

Personal Trainers Available by the Download

| | | | | |

By BOB TEDESCHI, New York Times

WHY hire a personal fitness trainer to bark at you for $50 an hour when you can download one online for a fraction of the price — and spare yourself the embarrassment of having someone watch as you never quite get in shape? That is the question an increasing number of would-be fitness buffs are asking, as more trainers package their services in audio or video files that can be downloaded into an iPod or P.D.A. for a quick trip to the gym.

The idea dovetails with the suddenly voracious appetite for downloadable media among online consumers and the long success the fitness industry has enjoyed in selling home video products like workout tapes. And while this trend is too nascent to be judged a success (there are no Tae Bo sessions for the iPod yet), it does hold great potential for the personal training business, which has historically been marginalized by high prices.

GarageBand: perfect tool for instant fitness tracks?

| | | | | | | |

GarageBand is changing the face of music creation, and we here at fitPod couldn't be more thrilled. In fact, we can't wait to hear the first original fitness compositions built on bpm and workout-appropriate rhythms. GarageBanders unite! Send us your tracks!

By Jim Dalrymple, Macworld, June 21, 2006

When Apple released GarageBand in 2004, the music creation program aimed at consumers seemed like just another component in the iLife suite of multimedia applications. But a little more than two years after that initial release, audio software and hardware makers have come out with consumer products of their own. And few make any secret of the fact that it was GarageBand that inspired them to reach out to this new audience.

Solution: Wear Five Pedometers

| | | | | |

pedMany Pedometers Can't Keep the Pace, June 21 - HealthDay News

Cheaper pedometers that purport to measure each step you take may not always be accurate, a new Belgian study finds. Researchers at the University of Ghent tested more than 1,000 pedometers. They had 35 adult volunteers wear 30 pedometers -- five per day -- that measured their steps for six days. The volunteers also maintained an automated step-count log that precisely logged their steps. Counts from both the pedometers and the automatic step log were compared for accuracy. In one in every three pedometers tested, the count was off by more than 50 percent as compared to the automated step log -- and in about two-thirds of these pedometers, steps recorded were higher than those taken and noted by the log.
